Looking to add a feathery friend to your pocket pal amigurumi collection? Look no further than this adorable Flamingo Crochet Pattern! This free pattern includes easy-to-follow written instructions, helpful photos, and even video tutorials to guide you every step of the way. This quick and easy project will result in a cuddly flamingo friend that you can take anywhere!

Not only does this blog post include some suggestions to customize your free flamingo crochet pattern, but scroll to the end for some little known fun facts about these majestic, prehistoric looking creatures. So, it’s a simple pattern that’s perfect for honing your amigurumi skills, plus you’ll learn even more about these regal birds as we go!

Pink Yarn Flamingoes!

Flamingos are such gorgeous creatures. Every time we go to the zoo I’m always mesmerized by their stunning pink feathers. These little cuties are probably one of my favourite recent makes.

I found these beautiful colours of Bernat Baby Velvet and Bernat Baby Crushed Velvet (both medium (4) weight yarns) at my local Michaels store a little while ago. It was love at first site and has been used in a bunch of recent designs, including the Pocket Pal Bunny and Chicks. With beautiful pink and coral tones in was inevitable that I use it for cute little flamingos as well.

These patterns are constructed by working from the bottom up with the option to minimize sewing and crochet the limbs into the body as you go. I just love a low-sew amigurumi pattern!

Personalize Your Pink Feathered Friend for your Valentine

This free flamingo crochet pattern provides the perfect opportunity to craft a unique and heartfelt Valentine’s Day gift! Here are a few ideas to transform your flamingo into a lovebird worthy of your special someone:

  • Hearts & Sparkles: Crochet tiny red hearts to adorn your flamingo’s wings or body.  For an extra touch of sparkle, use glittery yarn for the hearts, or sew on some glittery felt eyes!
  • Love Note:  Craft a miniature envelope from felt or fabric to tuck under your flamingo’s wing.  Inside, write a sweet message for your Valentine, making this a truly personalized gift.
  • Color Coded Love:  Ditch the classic pink and create a flamingo in your Valentine’s favorite color yarn, or use a combination of their favorite colors. You can even personalize the beak or legs with a contrasting color for something a little more playful.
  • His & Her Pair: Crochet a pair of flamingos – did you know they mate for life?! Create both a boy and a girl version – or whatever you think would be received best for the couple you’re gifting it to. A bow or a bow tie might be one idea, or change up yarn colours.

Use your creativity and imagination, to personalize your flamingo friend and create a Valentine’s Day gift that’s as unique as your love!

Mini Me! Crafting a Flock of Flamingo Friends

Fun Fact (you can find even more interesting facts at the bottom of this post)!

There are a few names to call a flock of flamingos out there, so take your pick! A Stand of Flamingos, A Regiment of Flamingos – and my personal favourite – A Flamboyance of Flamingos!

Now, if you did want to create a whole flamboyance of flamingo friends, not just one? Great news! This amigurumi flamingo crochet pattern is easily adaptable for smaller versions too!  While the pattern provides detailed instructions for the standard size flamingo using worsted weight yarn and safety eyes (don’t worry, sewing them on is a breeze!),  you can simply switch to a lighter weight yarn – and appropriate crochet hook – to create a whole flock of mini flamingos.  This makes it a perfect pattern for beginners who want to practice their crochet skills on a smaller scale, or for those who love the idea of handmade pieces in all sizes. Imagine a colourful collection of mini flamingos adorning your desk, bookshelf, or even a cute mobile!  The finished size is entirely up to you, making this flamingo crochet pattern lots of fun when it comes to customization.

How to assemble your Pocket Pal Flamingo Crochet Pattern

Sewing Placement – I highly recommend pinning ALL parts in place BEFORE sewing to make sure everything sits properly and is to your liking 🙂

Note:  Disregard sewing the feet and wings if you’ve already crocheted them on.
Feet:
Place the Feet at approx Round 5 of the body about 4 sts apart.Sew in place.  When sewing the feet in place I sewed the top of the last FULL ROUND DOWN instead of just the sts from crocheting the round together.
Wings:
Place the wings at approx Round 18 of the body, approx 4 sts apart.  Sew in place.  When sewing the wing in place I sewed the top of the last FULL ROUND DOWN instead of just the sts from crocheting the round together.
Beak:
With the increases from Rounds 3 and 4 pointing down, centre the beak below the eyes placing it between Rounds 25 and 29 of the head.  Stuff lightly and sew down along Round 8 of the beak
Tail:
Place centred on the back of the body between Rounds 5 and 11.  Stuff lightly and sew  in place along Round 7 of the tail.

Congratulations!

7 Fun Flamingo Facts You Didn’t Know You Wanted to Know!

1. Flamingos Aren’t Actually Pink: Their vibrant pink colouring comes from pigments in their food, primarily shrimp and algae. Without these colourful foods, they’d be more of a grayish white!

2. Upside-Down Diners: Flamingos are filter feeders, using their uniquely shaped beaks to sift tiny food particles from the water while standing upside down in shallow water.

3. One-Legged Loungers: These graceful birds can sleep standing on just one leg! It’s thought this helps conserve energy and body heat.

4. More Than Just Pink: There are actually six different flamingo species found around the world, with varying colours including red, orange, and even black!

5. Muddy Masons: Unlike most birds, flamingos build their nests out of mud, creating small volcano-shaped mounds in shallow water.

6. Tricky Knees: Don’t be fooled! What appears to be a backwards knee bend is actually their ankle joint. Their true knees are tucked high up on their bodies.

7. Lifelong Lovebirds: As mentioned earlier, flamingos tend to mate for life, working together to raise their young.
